For more than a century, Abbott has been a leader in developing pharmaceutical products that make a difference in patient care, having advanced breakthroughs in areas as diverse as anaesthesia, anti-infectives, virology, immunology, neuroscience and cardiovascular.
Today, we continue to apply a rich depth of expertise across these and other healthcare disciplines to bring to market promising medicines that address critical and unmet health needs.
Key Therapeutic Areas
Immunology
Our scientists, leaders in the field of immunological research, are applying innovative monoclonal antibody technology to discover and develop novel therapies to treat diseases to the immune system. We continue to discover and research biologic compounds. A focus of this research has been finding innovative treatments for autoimmune disorders.
Cardiovascular
In cardiovascular, we focus on identifying and bringing to market therapies that help treat conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. We are poised to be a leader in medicines that help manage multiple blood lipids, including cholesterol and triglycerides, through vigorous development of innovative compounds to improve lipid profiles.
Virology
An important focus of our work in virology is combating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A leader in treating HIV, Abbott scientists continue to develop novel protease inhibitors. And our innovative formulation advancements have vastly improved the delivery of these important drugs to the developing world. Currently, we are also researching better ways to treat hepatitis C.
Renal Care
We are committed to ongoing innovation in the area of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Metabolics
Metabolic disease, including diabetes, obesity and thyroid disorders, are growing worldwide. Our leading products in this area are addressing this significant unmet need.
Anti-Infectives
Abbott has a history of leadership in the area of infectious disease, including our role as one of five pioneers to participate in the commercial production of penicillin. We have developed and launched a number of innovations in this area.
Neuroscience, Pain Care and Anaesthesia
We have a strong scientific foundation in the areas of neuroscience, pain care and anaesthesia proven by leading products. Building on this expertise, our research and development teams are investigating new therapies for a variety of conditions. Today, our scientists are studying the brain's response to pain to discover safe and effective therapies and to provide patients with additional treatment options.
Oncology
Our oncology research goal is to develop more targeted therapies for patients living with cancer. Our approaches address multiple phases of cancer progression, from new blood vessel formation and cell cycle control to programmed cell death. We have several different classes of compounds in various stages of clinical development. These approaches address multiple phases of cancer progression, including angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), signal transduction and programmed cell death (apoptosis).
