A team’s ability to never give up, to continue on an often challenging path, and to keep pushing on—even when the odds were stacked against them—paid off with an invention that has the potential to help people live better and longer.

When a person is sick with an infectious disease, every hour counts. Infectious disease diagnosis is based on techniques pioneered by Louis Pasteur over 150 years ago. A sample of the patient’s blood is put it in a warm place for a few days and you wait for something to grow so you can identify what is causing the infection and select the right treatment.

The potential to change—and save—lives was a driving force for Ecker and his team. “This needed to be brought into the 21st century,” says Dr. David Ecker. With that in mind, Ecker and his team started developing the technology that would become Iridica.*

Relentless Innovation

Iridica’s technology involves extracting and amplifying DNA, and by mass spectrometry identifies the cause of the infection by comparing the data against a panel of known pathogens. All of this happens in a matter of hours—rather than days. By helping doctors diagnose and treat infections sooner, Iridica has the potential to save many lives a year.

Though the road wasn’t always easy, Ecker believes working toward something with meaningful impact kept the team moving forward. “You need to have the people who believe it with you. And then you can solve anything.”

* IRIDICA is currently available only in Europe and other CE–Mark recognized countries, IRIDICA is not approved for use in the United States.
