Statement from Abbott on Use of Abbott’s ARCHITECT SARS-COV-2 Antibody Test with Home Sample Collection Kits

Maidenhead, BERKSHIRE, 27th May, 2020 — We understand we live in unprecedented times, where the demand for self-sample collection solutions for testing is high, but Abbott has not currently validated our SARS-CoV-2 laboratory tests for self-sample collection procedures, such as finger stick (capilliary) blood.

The accurate tests we develop for our high-volume testing instruments are only supplied to NHS and other accredited laboratories, staffed by trained and accredited personnel.  These are not home tests. The Abbott SARS-CoV-2 laboratory antibody test has currently been validated using venous blood taken by a trained professional.

Abbott is committed to bringing a range of testing options to market to help tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. We understand some accredited laboratories have completed validations using a self-sample collection procedure and they are now working with the relevant bodies to demonstrate their results and seek appropriate evaluation.
